Willamette National Forest

Detroit Ranger District

The Willamette National Forest stretches for 110 miles along the western slopes of the Cascade Range in western Oregon.  It extends from the Mt. Jefferson area east of Salem to the Calapooya Mountains northeast of Roseburg.  The varied landscape of high mountains, narrow canyons, cascading streams, and wooded slopes offer excellent opportunities for campers, hikers and all outdoor enthusiasts.  The Detroit Ranger District located in the northern part of the forest, bordering Mt. Hood National Forest and the Warm Springs Indian Reservation.

This area is accessible from the west on Highway 22 from Salem, from the east on Highway 22 via Highway 20/126 from the Santiam Pass area, or from the north on Forest Road 46 from the Mt. Hood National Forest.

 

Santiam Flats Campground

Santiam Flats Campground is located approximately 2 miles east of Detroit at an elevation of 1,600 feet.

Breitenbush Campground

Breitenbush Campground is nestled along the banks of its namesake river in the forests of western Oregon. The peaceful flow of the river can be heard throughout the campground, providing a peaceful getaway for campers.The campground lies in the Willamette National Forest, which stretches for 110 miles along the western slopes of the Cascade Range. The varied landscape of high mountains, narrow canyons, cascading streams and wooded slopes offer varied recreational opportunities for visitor.

Cleator Bend Group Campground

Cleator Bend Group Campground, located on a bend of the Breitenbush River, is a popular destination for river runners and camping lovers alike. The group area provides an ideal base camp for fishing, hiking, biking and more.

Humbug Campground

One can take a scenic stroll through an old-growth forest along the Breitenbush River. May through July, the rhododendrons put on a spectacular show blooming in various shades of pink.  From Hwy 22 at Detroit, turn onto Breitenbush Road #46 and continue for 5 miles to Humbug Campground.

Cove Creek Campground & Group Campground

Cove Creek Campground rests on the shores of Detroit Lake at an elevation of 1,600 feet. Campsites are surrounded by towering trees, which create a secluded atmosphere. Visitors enjoy exploring the area and discovering osprey hovering above or nesting in many trees.

Hoover Campground & Group Campground

Hoover Campground rests on the shores of the sparkling Detroit Lake. The area is covered with towering trees, making for secluded, peaceful camping spots. Visitors enjoy fishing, boating on the lake, and hiking on the Stahlman Point Trail.

Riverside Campground

Riverside Campground, at Detroit, is an excellent outdoor retreat designed for campers more interested in a remote experience. Guests are greeted with grand, mature cedars and Douglas fir trees as they drive into the campground.

Southshore Campground

The popular Stahlman Point Trail is nearby.  All 30+ sites are first-come-first-served; each with a picnic table and fire ring.  Vault toilets, drinking water and boat ramp are provided in the campground.  Check out the Forest Service Website for rates, directions and current alerts.
