Lake Almanor Area
PG&E manages campgrounds and picnic areas, for the USDA Forest Service, around Lake Almanor and Butt Lake as well as one in Humbug Valley and one north of Chester, CA.
Last Chance creek Campground
Last Chance Campground is located just north of Chester, California, on one of the inlets to Lake Almanor. PG&E takes reservations for group camping here and there are 12 first-come-first-served sites as well. This shady, laid-back, campground is popular for its remote location that is close enough to enjoy Lake Almanor and Lassen National Park. Get away from it all as you travel the 4 mile, well-maintained, gravel road along the massive meadow teeming with wildflowers and wildlife.
Yellow Creek Campground
Yellow Creek Campground is located about 10 miles south of Hwy 89, near Chester, California. Set among huge Ponderosa Pine, this campground provides access to world-class fly fishing. There is no garbage service in the area. Pack it in, burn it or pack it out. This has greatly reduced bear sightings in the campground. Getting there can be an adventure as campground fans often remove directional signs along the well-maintained gravel logging road from Hwy 89.
Ponderosa Flats Campground
Ponderosa is located about 4 paved miles south of Hwy 89, near Chester, California . Set among huge Ponderosa Pine, this campground sprawls the northeast side of Butt Lake. Families have made Ponderosa their summer camping tradition for generations. No water sports, other than fishing, are allowed on the lake. The pavement ends just past the campground and the boat launch is about 2 miles further.
Cool Springs Campground
About 4 miles past Ponderosa Flats Campground is Cool Springs, also on the shores of Butt Lake. This smaller campground provides a more intimate setting for families to enjoy canoeing, kayaking, sailing and fishing.
Rocky Point Campground
Rocky Point Campground is nestled on the southwest shore of Lake Almanor among giant Ponderosa and Sugar Pines. Water sports of all kinds is a popular activity. Campers can launch your boat at the nearby boat launch, park your trailer in designated areas in the campground, and beach or anchor your boat near your campsite. This large campground has plenty of space between sites and has a couple group areas for your family reunion.
Camp Conery Group Campground
Camp Conery Campground is a reservation-only group site with showers, flush restrooms, kitchen/dining area, group fire ring and cabins. The boat launch for Lake Almanor is within a half mile. A picnic area and beach on Lake Almanor are within walking distance, across Hwy 89. There is limited parking so do your research if you have boats, trailers or RVs.
