Although the recreation area encompasses all of Lake Moomaw, this blog will only describe the area around Sugar Ridge Campground and the other nearby campgrounds, descriptively named: 1, 2 and 3.
Bolar Mountain is a popular destination including camping, hiking, fishing, and all kinds of boating on the scenic Lake Moomaw. 11 miles of hiking trails are nearby. Two scenic overlooks, Islands Overlook Spur and Grouse Point Overlook, can be accessed from those trails. Anglers fish for brown and rainbow trout, bass and crappie.
Each of the campgrounds have a variety of campsites that include both RV sites with electrical and water hookups and those more suitable for tents. These 4 campgrounds contain 137 sites which include 1 group picnic site for up to 100 people, 1 group overnight campsite for up to 50 people, 32 electric, 81 non-electric, 2 tent-only and 6 walk-to sites. 123 of the 137 campsites are reservable on Recreation.gov.
